How It Works
The way it works is simple. In winter, warmth is drawn from the earth through a series of pipes, called a loop, installed beneath the ground. A water solution or refrigerant circulating through this piping loop carries the earth's natural warmth to a heat pump inside the home.
The heat pump concentrates the earth's thermal energy and transfers it to air circulated through interior ductwork to fill every space in your home. Alternatively, the heat can be transferred to water for comfortable radiant heating solutions.
In the summer, the process is reversed; heat is extracted from air inside the house and transferred to the biggest "heat sink" of all--Mother Earth--by way of the ground loop piping.
The Geothermal system can also be used to generate domestic hot water through either a full time on demand solution or a part time “desuperheater” solution. Savings can be substantial on your annual hot water bill.
Because Geothermal technology uses such a readily available source of energy--and uses it so efficiently--it can save a substantial amount of money on monthly heating and cooling bills. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, geothermal systems save homeowners 30-70 percent in heating costs, and 20-50 percent in cooling costs, compared to conventional systems.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy have both recognized Geothermal technology as the most efficient and environmentally friendly home heating and cooling system available.
Studies show that approximately 70 percent of the energy used in a geothermal heating and cooling system is renewable energy from the ground. The remainder is clean, electrical energy which is employed to concentrate heat and transport it from one location to another.
Geothermal technology may sound almost too good to be true, but it's advanced technology that you can use right now.
Residential and Light Commercial Applications
● Geothermal systems represent a savings to homeowners of 30% to 70% in the heating mode and 20% to 50% in the cooling mode, compared to conventional systems.
